Some features of weasel (Mustela nivalis L.) ecology based on observations in the Moscow region

Up to 50% of whole local rodent population may live in stacks in winter.108 of 800 stacks dismantled over 6 years had signs of occupation by weasels, fewest after poor vole years. Rodents highest in stacks with no weasels, because weasels kill far more than they can eat. Decline in numbers of rodents per weasel related to the length of time the weasel had been in the stack – may clean them all out then move on. 4 litters found, 2-5 young.
