Note on the origin of the present mammalian fauna from the Balearic and Pityusic Islands

Usually assumed that island faunas saturated from postglacial times, and that human influence decreases numbers of species. Suggests the reverse is true – island faunas are naturally impoverished and human influence is to increase the numbers of species. List weasels as among the species brought to these islands by “activity, voluntary or not, of man”. With ref to McArthur & Wilson theory, human activities have the effect of bringing remote islands closed to mainland.
