Of 231 serum samples collected from Trichosurus vulpecula in different parts of New Zealand in 1975 and 1989, 8 (3.5%) had precipitating antibodies to the group specific antigen of mammalian adenoviruses. No neutralizing activity against canine adenovirus type 1 was found. The possibility of using a species-specific virus as a vector to carry genes in a population control programme is discussed.
